Golf, Pinehurst and the Sandhills of North Carolina go together naturally. With over 43 courses in a 10 mile radius, this region truly deserves its reputation as "The Golf Capital of the World." The Sandhills is a region in the interior of the Carolinas. It is a strip of ancient beach dunes, with evidence of a former coastline, formed principally during the Miocene Epoch, circa 20 million years before the present.

Golfers young and old, and of all levels of ability, flock to this area to play on courses amidst rolling hills, soaring pine trees and sumptuous flowering trees and shrubs lining many of the fairways. The area boasts courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and, of course, Donald Ross.
Pinehurst Resort hosted the 1999 and 2005 US Men's Opens and will host this tournament again in 2014, as well as the 2008 US Men's Amateur. Pine Needles in Southern Pines has hosted the Women's US Open twice, most recently in 2007.
